What makes a deck truly freestanding is that it is self-supporting. It does not use the adjacent house for support. It has two support beams one in the front the other in the back. It stands "free" from attachment and not supported by the adjacent house. Adding more support to deck will add to the cost of the deck but is required by local code if house does not have solid rim board.
If the house has solid rim board we can attach deck ledger to the house which would not require the back beam.
